So, are you ready for a taste of adventure?

Montaigut-le-Blanc: a village perched between history and panorama!

Welcome to a setting worthy of a postcard, only a few steps away from the campsite… This medieval village perched at the foot of the Vocan du Sancy is full of charming cobbled streets where you can stroll and visit the small local shops. A must-see is the ruined castle (dating from the 17th – 15th centuries), which proudly dominates the valley and was the birthplace of two Montaigut brothers (yes, it’s all in the name…). The fort retains its large square keep, a stair turret, a pointed gateway and the remains of the old chapel (12th century), which you will have the pleasure of admiring up close. You’ll probably also pass the Romanesque church of Saint-Blaise. Needless to say, the panoramic views will take your breath away. Perfect for a family outing, combining heritage and nature. Take a photo break at the top of the village! Along the river below, ‘Montaigut-le-Bas’ is home to orchards, gardens and old mills, the starting point for several walks, one of which will plunge you into a ‘Hobbit-stic’ atmosphere…

Welcome to the home of the Hobbits (or almost...): discover the cellars of Saint-Julien!

Still in the village of Montaigut, discover a rather unique underground treasure! Nestling in the heart of the little hamlet of Saint-Julien, these troglodytic cellars dug into an ancient flow from the Sancy Volcano (1 million years old, no less…), were once used to store wine and foodstuffs. Today, they offer a fascinating insight into local history. As you wander through this veritable underground labyrinth, you’ll discover galleries with walls sculpted over the years, some decorated with mysterious symbols. The ambient humidity and constant coolness also make it the ideal place to age good cheeses (so well known in the area) or enjoy a glass of local wine (in moderation, of course). Well, contrary to all expectations, you won’t be welcomed into the home of the Hobbits, but you will have the chance to meet some friendly local producers! An unusual visit that will transport you out of time…

The Volcans d'Auvergne Regional Nature Park: a wild paradise to explore!

Welcome to one of France’s largest regional nature parks, where nature seems to have stepped straight out of an adventure book! Imagine more than 120 dormant volcanoes, valleys sculpted over the centuries, crystal-clear lakes and exceptional biodiversity. Here, every trail is a promise of discovery: breathtaking panoramas from the summit of the Puys, hikes through the mountain pastures where you can watch the Salers cows (the stars of the region) graze peacefully, and mysterious forests where you can almost expect to come across a druid. Lovers of outdoor activities will be delighted: hiking, paragliding, mountain biking, or even a trip in a hot-air balloon to admire the volcanoes from the sky, the choice is yours. For a gourmet break after all that effort: a good truffade or a platter of Auvergne cheeses should revive you! A magical place where nature tells its own story, through sublime landscapes and unique flora and fauna. It’s a great place to make memories with your family.

Hiking around the Puys d'Auvergne: it's time for a 100% natural adventure!

If you’re visiting the Puy-de-Drôme, there are two hikes you won’t want to miss!Just 1 hour from the campsite, set off to climb the Puy de Sancy, the highest peak in the Massif Central at 1,886 metres, with several hiking routes to suit all levels. For the more adventurous, the trail from Le Mont-Dore winds its way across the ridges and reveals postcard-worthy scenery: waterfalls, pastures and plunging views over green valleys. The less adventurous (we won’t judge) can opt for the cable car that takes you almost to the top, followed by an 860-step staircase (to really earn the view!). At the top, a 360° panorama extends over the Auvergne and, on a clear day, as far as the Alps!

Just 40 minutes from the campsite, Puy de Dôme, the undisputed star of the Chaîne des Puys, rises to 1,465 metres and offers a breathtaking view of the sleeping volcanoes. The climb can be made on foot via the Chemin des Muletiers, a 45-minute ascent where every bend rewards you with a breathtaking view. For a gentler experience, the Panoramique des Dômes, a cogwheel train, takes you to the summit effortlessly. Once at the top, you can admire the remains of Mercury’s temple and discover the incredible sea of volcanoes that stretches as far as the eye can see.

Did you know about volcanic lakes? Discover two of the local gems: Lakes Pavin and Chambon...

Come and discover two volcanic lakes with very different, but equally magical, atmospheres! Lake Pavin (30km from the campsite) is a mysterious and bewitching crater lake, almost completely circular and deep blue in colour, which intrigues as much as it fascinates. It was created by a volcanic explosion (dated 6,900 years ago) and its deep waters (up to 92 metres!) still conceal many secrets. Enjoy a 100% nature walk around the lake, ideal for total immersion in a magical setting of dense forest and emerald reflections. Mythical creatures are even said to have made their home here…

Lake Chambon (also 30km from the campsite), more family-friendly and accessible, is a real invitation to relax. Its landscaped beaches make it a perfect spot for a refreshing dip in summer, and a great spot for thrilling sports such as paddle-boarding or canoeing in an enchanting setting. An easy trail takes around an hour, with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. A place not to be missed for a relaxing break in nature!

A trip back to the Middle Ages: welcome to Château de Murol

Now for a little historical break! Perched on its rocky promontory, Château de Murol (30mn from the campsite) proudly dominates the valley, offering a fascinating plunge into the heart of the Middle Ages. This 13th-century jewel, once impregnable, today reveals its imposing walls, watchtowers and remains that have survived the decades. For an even more authentic experience, take in the medieval re-enactment shows that bring to life the knights, archers and craftsmen of yesteryear. You can even learn how to handle a sword (or at least admire those who know how…).

After the visit, take a stroll around the castle to enjoy the spectacular views over the Auvergne Volcanoes. A trip back in time not to be missed under any circumstances (period costume not required)!

A real work of art… and an original family outing. Take home a souvenir!

Of course, you can’t go home without tasting the famous Saint-Nectaire farmhouse cheese, matured in volcanic caves and with a creamy flavour that will delight your taste buds!
